general VS editorial license sales expectation

Discussion started by had

Hello,

I am about to start to do some modeling but I have a question regarding the licenses before starting.

Can someone tell me if you can expect to sell an item more if it s under a general license ?

For example, let s say I want to model an electrical razor. My reference is a razor from the brand 'Braun'. Shall I modify it while I m modelling it to be able to license it as Genaral License or shall I don t care too much and model as close as possible than my reference and license it as Editorial ? Does it make a big difference in your sale expectation ?

I am asking this because on one side, if I would buy a 3d model I would want be able to use it commercially (general license) but on the other side the most sold 3d models on cg trader are cars which are obviously under strict editorial license.

Thank you.

Why not just provide both of them, exact copy with editorial license and adjusted one with general license, see what works best?

It s a bit tricky and definitely more work to provide 2 models... That s really a decision you make before or at least while you re modeling.

Don t want to spend twice the time :) I was just wondering if people chose to use general license because you can expect more sales ?

I think most demands go to general license.
If I'm right this was also covered in the blog some time ago, where statistics showed more favor for generic models.

It most likely depends on use cases, for example in a game a brand would be avoided in most cases and in short films or video/photo montages also.

But if it involves commercials for that specific item, then obviously they would not mind and need an exact copy.

So that's why maybe doing both is best because you could deliver something for all.
I don't understand you would need twice the time to make a generic copy, because you rely need not change all that lot to have a new model. Just make the copy and afterward change some design features that are hallmarks of the brand, and avoid using the brand name.

If you really need to go for one or the other I would bet on generic (always safe).
