Can we have a separate menu category, Artistic/Sci-Fi/Fantasy ?

So that all Artistic/Sci-Fi/Fantasy related items can be arranged under its own menu item and its own subcategory's. This would make a nice overview of all those related items and filter out real world items.

It would be nice to have following subcategories under it, e.g. characters, robot/cyborgs, weapons, equipment, design details/parts, transportation, spaceship/space stations, cityscape/environments, alien plants, creatures.

I like the layout of the category page very much, having this nice representative image and some introductory text and the subcategory's below it (!!just love it, it's perfect!!) It feels like entering specific sections of a large well organized store.

However I think we need a Sci-Fi section and a nice representative image for it (maybe something like this one? https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/architectural-exterior/sci-fi-fantasy/roffola-city), and a nice introductory text like something in the genre of "want to find something out of this world" etc.? To me it feel like Sci- Fi stuff is scattered all over the store in all sections.

I think those nice category overviews have a an inspirational potential for designers. As a designer you get to see these overviews and get a feeling of what is missing in those categories. If this part is arranged in a very good way then one maybe starts to design specifically for curtain category's.

Tip: Maybe there is still some room on those category blocks to add a shortcut to the specific challenge going on.

Hey! Thanks for a great suggestion, you always have something to add, that's great.

I know that you are a fan of sci-fi and that your portfolio looks futuristic, but now I imagine if I create historic stuff and want that all my models could be found under one category "Historic", so I would like that all historic planes, cars, people, buildings would be presented under that category.

Of course that makes sense, but, our categories are presented based on real-life objects "cars", "aircraft", "watercraft" and your suggestion would require to make categories based on expressions or theme, like "historic", "futuristic", "industrial", "medical". Let's say we go to category "Medical" and see all stuff that is related to medicine: from lab equipment, nurse, to ambulance car, medical station and so on.

I'll talk with guys what they think, maybe we could try to do something here. :)

Thanks man, the more suggestions, the merrier!

Hello Alex,

I agree I'm a fan of Sci-Fi stuff but it's not my intension to get a custom button to the things I like the most myself ore to have a shortcut to my work, although I would appreciate that very much ;-)

I posted the proposal open to a discussion to see how others think about it (I'm not the only Sci-Fi fan I hope?). I'm trying to think and add ideas/proposals useful in the front-end side as well as back-end side, so that uploaders/designers would have a clear and well defined category list and always find a good fit for all of their models and vice versa that visitors get to see only what they really wants to see.

I also have real world objects as well, I don't experience any problems in the back-end when uploading those and chose the right category, however non real fantasy types is always a bit of a tricky thing.

You say >> our categories are presented based on real-life objects <<

That's a bit what I'm trying to point out and call into question.
Wouldn't it make sense to make a category separation (somehow) between fictional objects and real world objects? Fictional/non fictional objects are mixed in almost all categories right now.

You actually bring a good idea under attention, it would indeed be good to have some extra main filters on top to check/uncheck like Contemporary, Historic , Fantasy, Sci-Fi (a genre and time period filter if you will)

I agree categorizing can get very tricky really fast, like you say, e.g. historic, futuristic, gothic, cybernetic, industrial, etc., it goo's on and on, but those are indeed characteristics specifically referring to stile and time periods and other properties. What I'm referring to (fictional non fictional) are core universal root properties. In categorization one tries to find these root labels pointing to common characteristics (which I agree are sometimes hard to organize due to overlap).

My proposal for an Artistic/Sci-Fi/Fantasy category would be to pull out all fictional stuff out of those main existing category's so to keep them all real. (those are already well organized except for some details)

(Just sharing some thoughts here)

Take for example the category "Space", subcategory's/root labels could be, e.g. Celestial bodies, Spacecrafts/Vehicles, Colonization, Astronomical equipment, Other. (this would then refer to all possible real life things) And in this case you could point all other stuff in the Spacecraft(Sci-Fi) category to the Artistic/Sci-Fi/Fantasy category and sub label spacecrafts/space stations.

Note: Things like, stars, quasars, magnetars, nebula, asteroids, planetoids, comets, planets/geography, galaxies, black holes, etc., they are all Celestial bodies jet right now the term planet is used as a subcategory root label and not the common root term "Celestial body" where a planet falls under.

The same for the category "Car", the root category which a car falls under is Vehicle, jet we have a separate category "Vehicle" (I suppose for having too many sub labels on car alone?) I also see the sub label Sci-Fi in the Vehicle category, that could be pointed to Artistic/Sci-Fi/Fantasy sub label Vehicles (leaving everything real in the Main Vehicles section).

Same in Character/Human category, wouldn't that be better to just call that "Human" (leave character out) and use sub categories, Man, Woman, Child, Anatomy, Clothing, Other, (keep it all real ) and move Fantasy and Sci-Fi to Artistic/Sci-Fi/Fantasy sub label characters. After all, a Character refers to a fictional fantasy figure, ore I'm I seeing this wrong?

In Architectural exterior I see Again Sci-Fi, so I see this core root label (the not real identifier), used as a sub label on three different occasions/categories (normally sub labels on itself under Sci-Fi things).
Then again (strangely) in Architectural details there is no room for Sci-Fi details here. (I agree It wouldn't fit, again root label would be used as a sub label, bud what do you do when you have Sci-Fi architectural details?) (missing category here)

In Plant/Tree all sub labels refer to real things (which is good), jet a lot of Fantasy game models and artistic expressions are mixed here. (architects looking for real things may not want to see that) (again due to missing base category I think)

Another example scenario,... currently, if you have a strange alien like animal, then you have to go to, character/Human sub label Sci-Fi, ore Animals sub label Other. (which one of both would be best fit?)
(again missing category to identify correctly)

In my example you would go to Artistic/Sci-Fi/Fantasy sub label creatures.

Sorry for the long reply, I felt the need to explain a bit more in depth what I was thinking when I wrote the first proposal.

There are plenty of other reasons of why I'm proposing this new category (maybe something for a later post) and There are also long term reasons why I believe this would be a good for CGtrader.

Thanks for replaying Alex,
Always good to know there is somebody listening and considering the input.
