Automatic watermark generator

Discussion started by iterateCGI

Can we have a watermark generator in the images upload area?

Some images need to be watermarked to prevent misuses.

Just sent the owners of this website (http://wallpaper-kid.com/neurons-3d-wallpaper.htm) a friendly request to remove my images/links as they are in violation with user terms.

They actually portray and redistribute the images as free stock images and the link is also competing in Google ranks with the actual product link here (https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/science-medical/medical/neurons-stock-images).

It's also hard to take legal actions as they link to the images uploaded in the database of this website.

Going to manually watermark the images now and reupload them.

just one question, did you ever in your life downloaded an image from the internet to your PC, even something small like an avatar or a small icon??? Then WTF are you complaining about.

Also do you think that watermark can protect your image :)

I suggest a much more doable solution than just "live with it" that labicko provided! :P

I noticed your preview images are full resolution. This destroys the need to download your package. Simply saving the image URL link I get your full res.

So I highly suggest putting your full res into a zip file they purchase and your preview images are small ones that fit in the preview window only. Also provide your own watermark. I find doing a light X over your image with your name in the middle works well and just set the opacity low.

That way, if this method is ever used they only get a small 600 x whatever image with your watermark on it. Hope this helps. good luck to you!

When I have done a google search, sometimes I have seen occasionally some of my images on other sites but the images are unaltered and still have my own logo on, which promotes my website and models so I don't really worry too much about it.

Thanks grumpntug, I indeed left the full res images (unmarked and for everyone to take for non commercial use) for comparable reasons flat_3d is bringing up.

So my initial take on this was to leave things to common sense (yeah, sounds strange).

For example this website (http://www.zmescience.com/science/neurology-science/neuron-database-06042015/) is also using one of the images (probably just downloaded the full res preview). But this is a different story, they put the image destination under it (good for me, CGt and this community in general). There is value in the use here, there also is no direct commercial gain in the way it is used (Would be an unnecessary time delay if the author of this article would have to contact me to ask for permissions).

This kind of use is something I can promote, it's an example that leaving a door open to common sense usages can work. The person in charge of writhing the Open-Access Neuron Database article may have reasoned that it's for an article related to an Open Source project, so it's just going to rout traffic and it will be ok when the source of the image is mentioned, he was probably also thinking the author of the image will be ok with this (and he would be right).

So the decision to mark the images and hinder common sense reasoning/use like this leaves me divided. In the meanwhile the user hoe was portraying/redistributing the images as free stock images quickly replayed to my request and kindly removed the images. He even removed the title free stock images in that gallery, so now the remaining images are also not advertised as free stock images anymore.

But all of this is actually a bit off topic, my real question was, is anyone ells interested in having a watermark option in the image upload area, and if so could CGt install such feature?

Well, you're left with these options then: Either be ok with anyone taking your work or be prepared to email anyone you notice using it poorly and spot weld for the next... Ever. I don't really want a gc trader watermark on most of my work. I'm fine with the option for sure and people are welcome to it but if I want to have that, ill just crack open PS and add one real quick. Still, if its something others find valuable, I'd support it, yeah.
