I've had a few models in the store for a little while now, and my modelling skills have significantly increased since my first upload. Meaning that some of my earliest uploads could greatly benefit from an update.
What I would like to do is edit some of my existing store items and replace the current files with newer, better ones.
Obviously changing the store descriptions and images is not an issue, my question is in relation to the attached files that customers download. If I try and upload an update file with the same filename as one currently attached to a store item, then instead of the file replacing the existing item as I hoped, the upload process renames the new file and uploads it as a separate attachments meaning I end up with 2 attached files, the old one and the new one. If on the other hand I delete the original file first and then upload the new one, then I end up with the latest file only, which is what I want, but it seems that all the stats associated with the original filename are lost, eg, download history.
So I'm wondering if there is any way for me to update an exiting file attachment but keep the stats associated with the original file.
A third option is for me to upload the new file using a new filename, leave the original in place and just stick with a store item that has both V1 and V2 of the model attached. My concern with this is any confusion it may cause with a customer. I mean I can spell out in the store description why this is so, or include a readme.txt spelling out the same, but customers will still get confused.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I upload updated files first and then delete the old files - never noticed anything wrong with statistics or similar things.
A follow on question:
If I do update a file will anyone who bought that item be automatically messaged that a new version has gone up which they can download?
If not, is it acceptable for me to message the customers myself to inform them of the new version, or is this some sort of invasion of privacy or just poor form? I'm not exactly swimming in sales, so messaging customers individually is not so onerous.
