Royalties or not for jewellery models?

Discussion started by cobalt-blue

hello,

I’ve read some topics on here about jewellery but I need to know how you guys do it.

Have you ever included a term such as ‘1% of profit for every cast pieces sold’ ?
With jewellery in particular, models can be printed and cast in big numbers, do I really want a one off $50 (for example) when the person potentially makes thousands out of it ?

I’m also thinking of a passive income, if the person sells the piece designed by me on a regular basis, I think it would be fair I take a little something $.

but even if the terms are set and agreed with by the buyer, what control or knowledge do I have over how many models are cast and sold ? They may lie about it or not even pay. Is this 1% royalty per sold piece realistic AND enforceable?

If it’s all too hard, could I benefit from at least engraving my name into the model, in a discreet area ?

I’m really new to this, please be patient I’m happy to learn and read what you have to say.

Thanks !

You can sell your models under a custom license https://help.cgtrader.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015122417-What-is-a-Custom-License

In case of violation of the terms of the license, you can use DMCA or Directive 2019/790.

If the paranoid fears that someone will make millions from your work even in this case don't let go, the best option would be to forget about 3D and open a bakery.

But if you open bakery in Sicily, someone would come offering you a protection, so depending on the place where you are planning to open bakery, bakery can be a bad choice.

A good baker in Sicily who knows how to quickly make buns with filling may be offered not only protection but also cooperation.

hi there @jaguarbeastproduction so what would you do if you wanted royalties? would you have a good discussion with the buyer first to assess whether they are serious? and also I haven't found any models for sale that are asking for royalties under a custom license, does that mean asking for royalties on cgtrader is not a thing? why not? would I be unreasonable to ask for royalties even small, does it deter buyers? thanks
