Hello,
There is no problem obout Disney, DC Comics and other famous models. If you make 1 000 000$ they get mad and send take-down notices lol
Hello all,
I'm a hobbyist that is now looking at getting more serious about my 3d modeling as my military retirement draws near. I've lurked on the site for a while now and there's something that has bothered me for that entire time. Basically, I see a lot of models on here that are based on the intellectual property of some pretty big companies like Disney and DC Comics. My question is how are these being sold on here? I see some very good quality models of Batman, Woody, etc; don't the companies that own those properties get mad and send take-down notices?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not attacking anyone in any way, shape, or form. I'm genuinely curious how this is possible from a legal standpoint. I would love to share some of the models I've made in the past, but I don't want to get into any trouble by posting them.
On a side note, this is my first post here so I thought I'd take the time to say hi to everyone. Some of the models I've seen on here are great and hope I can afford to buy some of them in the near future, even if I only use them to learn from artists more experienced than me.

Lol, that's good to know and thanks for the response! I guess I'm just so used to being in the mindset about every company going after pirated software that I can't seem to wrap my brain around it. :)
I think the copyright notices state something like: Third party brands, trademarks or copyrighted material may require the purchaser to seek further permissions from the respective owners of the material regarding usage.
Copyright law is very complicated and as vefilanna states I don't think the companies would worry unless you were selling lots.
Buyers would also be in the same situation and only if they were using the model in a successful game for example would the copyright holders take action.
I think I read somewhere that the Ford Motor company take a cut from sales of their 3d car models on one web site, so I think if companies were worried they would do it in this way, en bloc, with the 3d model sites and not the individuals.
No plaintiff, no judge!
The only question is, how much is a fie?
