Another mis-appropriated model being sold here ? Should there be a copyright declaration in this case?

Discussion started by Forester

The lantern model product being sold here (https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/architectural/lighting/oil-lantern-3-texture-variations) is a free asset created by Allegorithmic for the recent Substance Painter tutorial. (https://tutorials.allegorithmic.com/courses/a97b433a5997fd800b5ed300d783cc41/youtube-IGGQl9kVB1M). Anyone can download this model for free, I believe.

If Ceslav Sukstul (asicson) created this model for Allegorithmic and he has a copyright on the model, I suppose it is OK to post the pic in the Gallery and to sell this model here. If so, it might be best to declare this copyright in the product description.

Before bringing here such arguments I would suggest you download and check that lantern from Allegorithmic tutorial. They are similar just because create from real world objects but they are different in topology and rest stuff.
I created whole my lantern all by myself without any tutorial and more important without any high poly model from any other source.
I would like to receive your apologise for such offensive act without any close check up!

You certainly will have my apology in this case - that you have created the model completely from viewing the real world object. Being an old ancient forester, I actually own the physical lantern from which the Allegorithmic model was made. I must say that it is remarkable to be able to create such a close fit to the real world object, and such a close fit to the Allegorithmic model. Congratulations to you.

I completed the Substance Painter tutorial a week ago, using the downloaded model. So I am many hours familiar with that particular model. (In addition to having the original object in front of me on my desk.) You must admit they are remarkably similar ( yours and the one by Allegorithmic). And because the Substance Painter tutorial is widely known - more people than I will see the similarity, and since it appears that you used Substance Painter to create your materials, it might have been (or still be) prudent to declare in your Gallery image and in your product description, that this is a model of your own creation, and not the model by Allegorithmic.

Thank you, I tried hard to create a mix between few of the lanterns from google images. If put two our lanterns together it would be easy to notice that shape and even size is different.
Have a good day!

Asicson I would suggest you raise your price of that model, you can probably easily sell it for $29-$39+ .

At 5.99 your basically giving it away for free for an object that looks really good and time has been spent on making it, and it has unwrapped UV's. People will buy it at a higher price.
