Top selling filter

Discussion started by squallraziel

Hi everyone! I would like to know your opinion about the Top Selling filter. Does it work properly? I contacted CGtrader support, but I got an answer that is far from clear:

"Without going into too much detail- models are filtered using an algorithm that takes various criteria into consideration (likes, sales, views, velocity of visits, tags, technical information etc.).
There might be cases where models don't get equal exposure- we try to keep the search as fair as possible and enable models to be found equally from from all users, but with an ever increasing amount of models it gets quiet tricky to optimize."

I asked them again the same question a week ago, trying to be more clear, but I got no answer. What do you think?

I suspect you're talking about sorting, not filtering, right? Basically there are two types of sorting options: arbitrary (best match, trending) and strict (top selling, newest, higher price, etc.) We cannot know how arbitrary sorting is working and if it's working as intended, as that is black box. On the other hand, strict sorting is very clear and easy to check. It is very easy to see that none of strict sorting options works properly. From my observations only top selling sorting shows pretty much reliable results with some deviations, other options are badly broken and completely useless. CGT is well aware of that fact, yet they doesn't show slightest interest in fixing that :/

Yes, sorry for the confusion, I meant sorting. Thank you for sharing your opinion, in wich I see that you think that the Top Selling sorting option is more or less reliable. I agree with you when you say that it's impossible to know how the arbitrary sorting options actually work, and if they work as intended. I asked that because, for exemple, my bathroom model https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/architectural-interior/bathroom/modern-bathroom-with-parquet-floor is ranked 5 (out of 2429) in the cathegory Architectural interiors-Bathroom when the Top Selling sorting option is applied. And that model was sold only 4 times... It could be possible, but.... Isn't it a bit strange?

I see nothing strange. 4 sales is pretty decent result and it's perfectly possible that it can secure one of the top places in narrow, not so popular category. Think about it that way - there is almost 700 000 models in CGT database and about 90 000 total sales so far. That means that for each sold model, there is 7 without single sale. Take into consideration the fact that some models are sold multiple times and you can safely double the number of unsold models. Does your model's ranking still looks to you too good to be true? ;]

limonadinis haha no, knowing that now, no longer seems strange to me :) How do you know the number of CGtrader sales? Of course, you don't have to answer me if you don't want to, is just a curiosity. Thanks for the info!

Well, that's no secret, you just have to go to my sales page and look at operation ID of your latest sale ;]

limonadinis no no, sorry for the confusion, I meant the number of sales that CGtrader, as a company, has made over the years (you said that it has made 90000 so far).

There's no confusion, operation ID (OID) is incremental and it pretty much shows total number of sales, not just specific seller's sales. Did you look at it? It should be around 90K if you made your latest sale recently.

Hi,

Yes, we are aware of that - and yes, the sorting filters could really do with some upgrades - although right now, from our experience, they are not the most important aspects in customer's journey - the filtering options (rigged, low poly etc.) are more convenient for customers, and they are a bit more accurate than the sorting ones at the moment.

However, thoughts of updating the sorting filters are not too far away from our heads, but they are also not a top priority yet.

Regards,
Eddie

Thanks for answering. I hope those updates come soon. I'm sure I am not the only one waiting for them.

There is also a bug, when you check "free" in search option, you get free and paid models.

You are right, but I think that's a deliberate decision of CGtrader, in order to promote paid models.
