Starting out in Blender

Discussion started by MHCPhotography

Hello Everyone,

I purchased a 3D model here and very excited to give 3D modelling a try!  However being so new to it, I am having trouble opening the file in Blender.  I would greatly appreciate any help and insight into this.  How do you open files in Blender?  What type of file is best, as there are multiple selections as you download it from cgtrader.

Thanks!

Hello there. You have two options: provided you have Blender installed simply double click on the .blend file, this shall start Blender up. The second option is the usual one: start Blender, then hit file/open in the top toolbar. A navigation window is going to open so that you can locate your file. I hope this helps.

Hello, if the file is on other format, try to import, select the type, then it s ok.
For the format, .obj is simple and more powerful, i think, because you can export model texture and armature, and it runs on all the programs ; 3ds max, blender, 3d game studio, daz 3d,...
3ds is fine but you need to press "smooth" after importing.
Fbx is ideal for architecture creation
Good trade

Ok, so the first .max will not work because blender do not import it The second can be imported, but you must click on smooth botton, and in some cases the model is rotated in separate parts The lwo is not supported The fbx ; have some problems in smoothing and when you want to add some changes by applying a subdiv modifier The c4d is not supported The obj is perfect, note that if the car model have texture and you click on texture botton , you will se the model textured. I hope i did answer you.

Thank you! I have tried to import the obj and when I navigate to the file it appears as if it is not there. Do you know what the .rar is at the end of the file above? Do I need to change the file format before trying to bring it into Blender? Thank you for your help!

You must unrar your file the when you browse you surch for the .obj, because an object format contain 2 file obj ( the model) and mtl ( texture). If you do this and the it does not work, than ask your seller for the problem. Have a good day
