Royalty Free No Ai License. Doubts!

Discussion started by mauro80bs

Hi, I have doubts about the copyright regarding those models that bear this wording: Royalty Free No Ai License.
The text says that the models within this royalty can be used in your own projects without having copyright problems and also for commercial purposes.
In any case, inside the text there is the following sentence: but can be used in your commercial projects multiple times after paying for it just once.
Now, I don't understand... the objects I'm interested in are all free, but are them really free?

Copyright is not the same as license and certainly has nothing to do with royalties. Judging from how you use those terms interchangeably in your message, i think it's safe to assume that you have no clue what you're talking about. If you want to use purchased or freely downloaded assets for anything more than personal hobby project, you should educate yourself more what those terms means and what's your rights and responsibilities, otherwise you risk to get yourself in serious trouble. And also you should remember one thing - nothing in life is free, not even those models that you didn't have to pay to download them. Everything has its own rules and usage restrictions.

Yeah, I don't like all this legal stuff.
Reasoning through examples: I have published some models made by me on this site published with the wording "Royalty Free No Ai License".
I naively thought that they were free to everyone and in every sense.
However, this is not the case.
So does a user who downloads this type of content have to pay? and who? obviously if they are used for commercial purposes.

cgtrader is quite ambiguous with their licensing of models that are free to download. According to their terms and conditions: "product which is offered as a free download shall be licensed with the applicable license as chosen by the Seller." I think that means that if you didn't specify otherwise, rules of standard royalty free (No AI) license should apply. You can find summary of this license here: https://www.cgtrader.com/pages/terms-and-conditions#royalty-free-license scroll down to paragraphs 20 and 21. To answer your later questions, no, users who download your free models don't have to pay anyone to use them and yes, they are allowed to use those models commercially, unless you've chosen custom license and it's not allowed by that license. Keep in mind that cgtrader's standard royalty free license is much more restrictive than most creative commons licenses, so if you want to make your models as "free" as possible, you may want to chose custom license option and chose on of the CC licenses for your models. I always release my free models under CC-BY-SA license, however i might change this in the near future, since CC licenses does not govern artwork usage by AI and i don't like this.
