how to export 3dmax file to obj and fbx with full textures can open or import in maya

Discussion started by acdcz

I have a 3dmax model of building, i have export it to obj and this obj can import from c4d and 3dsmax well.

But when import from maya or even open it, it lost all textures, i can only seen in gray textures.

So can anyone have a solution to export 3dmax model to obj or fbx that can open or import  in maya well ?

thanks alot.

OBJ and FBX format doesn't store material information. Either you will have to make new materials yourself or if you use Vray, there are some tools to help that:

Here is another post related to this issue:

Could you describe what textures do you use? Is it bitmaps or do you use procedural textures as well? Also what is the renderer, 3dsmax standard, Vray or any other?

thanks you very much marius, i will try your way

i don't need material information, i just need only textures store and it is a bitmap like jpg, png ... etc.

when i export a 3dsmax file to obj, this obj can open well in c4d with full textures and UVW , but when open in maya it lost all textures, only seen in gray textures. I only use 3dsmax standard.

thanks marius , i will try this way

Hi acdcz,

(If you haven't figured this out already)

when you export OBJ from 3ds Max, you get a pop-up with options. Do this...
-Find "preset" at the bottom and make it Maya
-On top left side, inside Geometry box, ENABLE "Texture Coordinates"
-On top right side, inside Material box, ENABLE "Export Materials" and "Create Mat-Library"
Now export.
After export make sure that there is ".mtl" file along with .OBJ.
Now, when you import your obj in maya, it reads the mtl for your textures. (DO NOT RENAME MTL FILE... EVER.)

Also, its advised to keep your texture file in the same folder as your max file and strip its path inside 3dsMax before exporting. Export the obj in the same folder and if your want to move the obj, then move the texture file along with it.

Let me know if this does not help.

Important, use JPG 8.3 naming convention. (file name no longer than 8 letter, followed by a . and then 3 letters for extention.

Any image with a name longer than 8 letters will not retain it's path.
