Can anyone explain what these texture maps mean?

Discussion started by lshshinigami

I am a beginner in 3d modeling, and I don’t understand what these texture maps mean, especially the letters'L, M, N, P, R, BS, NG, NB' at the end of the file name refer to which word. Can anyone explain it to me?

file name:

Tifa_Body_D.dds

Tifa_Body_D.png

Tifa_Body_L.png

Tifa_Body_M.png

Tifa_Body_R.png

Tifa_Body_P.png

Tifa_Eye_NG.png

Tifa_Hair_BS.png

Tifa_Hair_NB.png

This is not a good naming convention, we would need to see the images of each to determine what they could be in some cases.

Tifa_Body_D.dds - This could be Diffuse or Displacement.
Tifa_Body_D.png - This could be Diffuse or Displacement.
Tifa_Body_L.png - This could be Luminance.
Tifa_Body_M.png - This could be Metallic.
Tifa_Body_R.png - This could be Reflection or Refraction (most likely the former).
Tifa_Body_P.png - Not sure, would need to see the image.
Tifa_Eye_NG.png - Not sure, would need to see the image.
Tifa_Hair_BS.png - Not sure, would need to see the image.
Tifa_Hair_NB.png - Not sure, would need to see the image.

So how do you get this model ? This is Tifa model from the game Final Fantasy VII Remake for PS4, wich is not available anywhere. This model can be obtain only by ripping from game or downloaded from warez sites.

Or bought on cgtrader from someone who has ripped it from game, or downloaded from warez sites :]

I on purpose didn't write that, but if you are right, it would be better for him to ask for a refund.

I bought a tool for extracting game models from others and extracted this model.

So you bought tool for extracting... I'll tell you what you done, you downloaded it from warez website. I just don't want to tell which one for obvious reasons. Are you aware that ripping 3d models from games is ilegal thing ? I can't be bothered to write more here. Just make sure that this model don't end up on sale here on cgt. https://ibb.co/Qj327HH

How much do you think this model is worth? 20$, 50$, 100$, 500$? I don't have to break the law for this small amount of money. In fact, I never intend to profit by selling this model. My purpose is art research rather than making money, because in my country, I don’t even have a collection method available to receive international payments such as U.S. dollars. If one day you see someone earning U.S. dollars, euros, etc. by selling this model , That person must not be me. So your actions are meaningless to me. Although I don’t like you who maliciously speculate on other people’s intentions, your copyright awareness deserves my respect. At least you are not like most copyright infringers.

1.It doesn't matter how much is worth, as soon as it's ripped that is considered stolen. 2.You already break the law by downloading it and asking questions here. 3.There is other ways to research art. 4.This is not speculation this is FACT I show that you are not telling the truth with that picture which is self explanatory. 5. I'm not copyright infringer YOU ARE.

This model was not downloaded from a certain website. Why do you think I downloaded it from a certain website? If you think so, please provide conclusive evidence, such as account number, website, and prove that I have direct contact with both

@lshshinigami, actually it would be less evil if you'd said that you downloaded the model from certain website - you could say that you didn't know that the model was a game rip posted illegally there. By admiting that you have ripped the model by yourself, you just let everyone know that you deliberately breached the game's EULA and thus broke the law.

You actually believe that I extracted the model from the game. Do you believe that I said I am the President of the United States? The picture I uploaded to the video does not prove that I extracted the model from the game. If I did extract the model, why didn't you see me opening the project file? Because I don’t own the project files at all, it’s just a screenshot of someone else’s website. I just saw it by chance when I was looking for a model and didn’t understand the meaning of the textures. You didn't even notice this obvious doubt.

I said that I extracted the model from the game, but I just wanted to attract people’s attention.

3dcargo probably got those right, judging by the maps shown in the video. However, I don't know what some of those secondary letters stand for. It seems convoluted. Looks like PhantomDesign is right. The channel is showing in-game models, so the only way to get that model is to either model it yourself based on the game, or rip it from the game. I'll be the second is probably the case here.

Agree with the all the comments above, these appear to be internal naming conventions specific to their workflow/game. Sorry mate even with the video you have shown it looks like you would be stabbing in the dark until you get the right combination - for example when you look at the eye it has an outside normal map and _NG looks like the base normal map so some kind of layering going on here. The _S looks like a Specular map, _P could be some kind of Position map but I'm unfamiliar with this, _SSS probably Sub Surface, _O Opacity, If i was to take a guess I would say _BS and extensions with two letters could be packed textures - for example Bump/Specular and would need to be separated by channel, or something else entirely. I would advise contacting the seller and clarify these textures and if you are using this for commercial purposes qualify that this is a legal model to use.
