File support for 3d printing

Discussion started by fleshcrafterscoven

As a seller on the platform selling printed models I do have some suggestions.

1) We dont need OBJ and FBX files. requiring multiple file formats otherwise we will show up lower in search rankings hurts 3d printing on the site.
2) if we need to have multiple file formats please support common printing slicer files like lychee, chitu, cura, so we can get those required multiple file types with out uploading a gigs worth of OBJs and FBX files that wont be used anyway.

I agree regarding FBX, but OBJ is a relative printing format. For example, a lot of people who do 3d printing use Meshmixer to prepare models, and OBJ is one of the default model types it can accept. Also, many people use SLS printing and upload to services like Shapeways. Again, OBJ is acceptable there. I think OBJ, STL, PLY, VRML (for color prints), WRL, and AMF or 3MF are the most commonly accepted file types. Obviously, STL is the most common by far, but the only one that doesn't make sense for printing is really FBX.

Just relative.

I get that OBJs can be used, I mostly just want any presupported lychee files I upload to actually count toward my models publishing score. Its silly to me that a duplicate file with a new extension matters more than a different file with different content.

why not export just model with supports as STL without garbage metadata added by slicer (and another reason: slicer software can be incompatible, or unavailable or... hundreds of reasons...) ?

Because its still an STL. The publishing score takes into account file TYPES. So adding another STL wont improve this metric. It needs to be a file format we can print. It seems the backend of CGtrader only cares about types of files anyway so it just needs to recognize the file as a valid format, nothing else.

They should clean up all the garbage first, sometimes I get impression that everything is 3d printable here on cgt no matter what it is.

Hi there,

Please understand that we are marketplace with more than 3 millions models published which means that certain actions can be not seen for some users.

CGTrader team receives claims each day, therefore specific models/users are reviewed/investigated and in some cases deleted/suspended.

We try to make our marketplace as clear as possible.

If you or anyone else sees a model that infringe copyright rules please contact our support team and provide proofs.

Kindly,
Austėja from CGTrader

Hi, I feel like my initial post of requesting file types recognition for slicers to assist sellers publishing score was lost by another users posts. Mt initial post in no way was about stolen models.
