How often do you sell your models?

It's quite random, I've sold 2 or 3 in one day sometimes and then not sold anything for 3 or 4 days. I guess it's all about what you're selling and what people want right now. Keeping an eye on the game types that are currently in development is a good way to ensure you're trying to sell the right things, at the right time.

If it isn't secret could you tell me what kind of 3d models do you sell more frequently?

Steam is a good source for that, also having lots of game-devs on your Twitter feed and join a few game-dev facebook groups as well. I rarely post in them but I do check what people are currently making every day.

just curious, how do use steam? i mean do you just look at games that are coming out to determine whats popular, to find trends? or is it smth more to it? Whats a good place to find relevant game-devs on twiter?

From none to only 22 models monthly. Last 2 months (november and december) - 9. So it's even not "passive income".

unfortunately a few (~2-5) models a moth. That's a bad result i guess. some months 0 some more.

for some time graves where going well, some shrooms go better, some walls.. surprisingly i sold only one skull for now :( either iam doing smth horribly wrong, or my subjects / polycount is not in demand. but i also dont get lots of views, so might be its just people dont find my models, but then again i add as mush of keywords / descriptions as i can, so no idea... why and what stuff sells or dont and why :(

Ah, sorry. Had a terrible neck for a few days so I didn't see your question. I find medieval models sell the best for me.

@mantas; Skulls! May I ask if you made skulls because they're there in the analytics?

oh at the time i started skulls i dont think i knew analytics tool :) i had one skull, made a model, then my coworkers saw it and started giving me skulls. one gave me 4, another 4, and then one coworker brought a big box of skulls! i have like half of them on cgtrader, haven't got time to do retopo for others. that's what u get for working in art school :P

Oh may, I wish I was at art school lol. I left any kind of school almost 40 years ago haha. What I wouldn't give to be back there :D

I figured you had seen them in analytics as a good keyword and decided to make a bunch. I find that looking at the subject with the least popular keywords and then making those models is better. If they're too popular (like characters~) you find that there are so many models for that subject that yours just gets lost. Making a model where there are only 10 of that thing gives you a chance for people to see yours.

I agree with you.

So many people try to make models which are very popular, so it gets harder and harder to sell your product. I think it is good idea to create deficient models.

That's a good strategy, thanks for sharing. I am trying to do some vr things (just for my pleasure) so the models i make serve 2 purposes - me playing in vr and second i try to sell them here. But your strategy is much more clever :)

Merry Christmas first of all! I did consider making a "list" on my blog of how I sell my models and what methods I use to determine what to make (if they hadn't been requested separately). I may just do that after the Christmas madness is over.

I spend around an hour sorting a model out after I have finished it as I upload to several platforms and then I like to "advertise" said model on many more. Facebook, Twitter, Blog, website, Discord, Reddit groups, Steam groups and a few other forums etc. This has been quite successful. It all boils down to how much time and effort you put into it just like anything else.

I haven't bothered doing the freelance thing here because I usually have projects to complete already and I really don't want to get stuck having to make furniture and things I don't particularly enjoy modelling, but if you're just here for the money then may I suggest you give that a go?

Hey, Missed many messages during Christmas. All the best to you as well! It would be very cool to get some tips on your promotion strategies, I think some people would be very happy. I would. If you have time, please do write it up! Same here with freelance thing. I also have a "day job" with stable income so i cannot make cgtrader a job. But still would be so nice to get more out of it. Its a bummer to post a model and see no views on it not even talking about sales :)

ps. After reading your post tried to look for some groups in fb.. find things like "Indie Game Promo"," GameDev Assets and Tools" etc. But the posts there get couple of likes, so i guess that's not worth the time to post my models? am i looking at wrong groups?

Yes mate, I think you are indeed looking at the wrong groups. The game-dev groups tend to be very busy places and it's not a case of actually posting your models, it's a case of just posting replies and dropping in that you do make models, eventually, you will be asked and then you go full metal jacket on them :D

Twitter is the best place because there are actual bots that will repost your tweets for you if you include certain hashtags such as #3d, #model and those will be shown to everyone else that follows the bot (almost all are game-devs).

hey, sorry for writing on old post, but one follow up question. when you do find forum or whatever, and do some "communication" and later on mention your models etc. that all amounts (if you are lucky) to one time sale, right? ... i went through steams upcoming games (not released) found all that i think could use some of my models.. now i should somehow find where online these specific developers hang out, and try to talk to them. that would be your strategy?

Something like that yes mate. And no, it doesn't mean a single sale at all. There maybe one dev that's louder than the others, that doesn't mean the others don't read, see or buy your stuff.

Since I started posting again in end of 2019, nothing.
