How Can I sell materials made in Blender?

Discussion started by queble

Hello fellow CG artists!

I have been modeling for almost 2 years now, and just started to try and sell models on cgtrader!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I use Blender (Version 2.79) and recently ran into a massive problem with my models!

Whenever I create a model in Blender, I ALWAYS create very cool looking materials using different types of maps (Occlusion, Spec, Normal, etc.) I also do things like layer multiple textures for maximum realism. from my experience in selling models, I can't figure out how to sell my 3D models with the materials assigned because when I upload the different texture files (because Blender can't export materials) I realize that my buyers will have to manually piece together their own version of the materials. I thought about putting the .blend files up for download, but then my buyers would only be able to view my materials in Blender. the only way I've been posting models is with separate texture files, but I realize that this way I will earn a bad reputation for not only non-realistic models, but angry customers who don't know how to apply their own textures.

I looked into this for a bit, and found that maybe baking my materials onto the model might work, but I'm definitely not certain...

Currently I am stuck on one very realistic "Natural Rock" model pack that I created, which has a very nice material that includes 2 textures and a height map with some specular data mixed in. if I post this model pack with Just the textures, then the buyers might only know how to use one texture at a time, and i might get complaints for false advertising. I would also lose all my reflection mapping and heightmap data in the material.

If anybody knows how I can sell my 3D models with materials made in Blender on cg trader, that would be a MASSIVE help!!!!!!!!!

Thanks,

-Queble

I know no software that can correctly export advanced materials into an exchange file format as fbx or obj, but a basic version of them with a few parameters and textures properly linked, more on account of current limitations of these file formats than limitations of the exporter plug-in/add-on used. You must upload your native .blend and have a bit of faith on the knowledge of your customers. You have to clearly name your textures (e.g. object_refl, object_nrm, object_height, etc) and if they use other software/render engine and they don't know how to set the materials on it, it's not your fault. You should upload your .blend only. If you can upload other proprietary file formats as .max or .skp with the materials already configured, great, but it's not necessary.

Ok thanks for the info! Now I don't have to scan the web for hours looking for an answer that doesn't exist!

Go under file -> external data -> automatically pack texture files into .blend

So that when you save the .blend, all textures will be saved and applied in the file already when you send it to someone. This post is 3 months old so you probably figured it out already but I thought i'd comment anyway
