Freelance Cost Estimate/ Business Planning

Discussion started by dmbgamer7

Hello, fellow artist.

I am in the process of planning a Game Production/Development Business for 2021. The first game produced will be a RPG based in a world that I have been creating for about 30 years. While going through financial analysis and employee salary projections, I have discovered that freelancers are a better option for the project. Now, I can through the current list of models and their selling price; however, there will be more models and objects that will need to be created when the project goes live. The problem that I am having is to estimate the cost of freelance work and model cost. I am assuming that there isn't a sound way to project cost, since most prices/costs are based on model specifications. Any suggestions or advice would be hopeful. I will be researching on search engines this question, but I figured I would ask anyway. Searching has given me an hourly estimate of 25 to 35 USD so I suppose if I went ahead an planned how long the project was going to take that would give an estimate to project for.

Thanks.

Another issues is how does freelancers handle Intellectual Property? The freelancer creates the model, but does the company or person that hired the freelancer own all the rights to the model or does the freelancer retain some right to the model created?

Regarding the rights, it depends how you arrange the deal with freelancer. You can ask to have exclusive rights to the asset, so esseantially it becomes yours and designer retains only authorship rights. Usually designer asks higher price if he loses commercial rights to the model, so you should take this to consideration.

Each model have a different difficult to create, varying by the level of quality you need and the complexity of model. Because this if you don't have a very detailed specification of what you need the negotiation whit the freelancer can be very long.
- Try make a list of references pics of quality you need (samples from other games or artwork).
- Try estimate the minimum and maximum polygons of models need.
- Texture sizes and extra textures like normal map or specular map.
- File formats.
- Animated or static, because this change the workflow completely.
- Additional level of detail models (LOD).

This topics help the freelancer understand better what you need and you can more easy compare the prices between the freelancers.
I hope this help.
