Do you ask royalties for your jewellery designs?

Discussion started by cobalt-blue

I haven't found one model that is under custom license asking for royalties over the cast pieces being sold.

I just started here and haven't published yet.

is asking for royalty not a thing or unreasonable? why would designers spend time to develop a model only to be paid a one-off $10 or $20 when the buyer can print and cast hundreds of times?

I feel like I need to be educated on the matter please. how do YOU do it and why? have you seen any model here asking for royalties?

do I shoot myself in the foot if I ask for royalties even 1%?

Well, most of the designers (not only on CGTrader) sell their digital assets under the terms of the standard Royalty-free license and as you can see, there are no scandals that someone bought models, opened a company and got rich for millions of dollars. Throw away fears and doubts and just sell. With the right approach, it can become at least a good hobby, and maybe a good business, it all depends on you.

As for 1%, take a closer look at the terms of the royalty-free license.

Regarding prices of 10-20 dollars. No one forbids you to set a price of 9999$ and write in custom license prohibitions on all possible types of use except for a single download, a single print with subsequent placement model in a hermetic cube of triple armored glass which should be stored, if not in the Gringotts Bank, then at least with FBI protection. All other uses are strictly prohibited.

There are several reasons why designers may choose to use a custom license with royalties. One reason is that it allows them to earn ongoing revenue from their work, rather than just a one-off payment. Additionally, it can help to deter unauthorized use or reproduction of the model.

However, it is important to note that asking for royalties can also potentially limit the number of people willing to purchase the model, as it increases the cost of each piece. Additionally, some people may be turned off by the idea of paying royalties.
