I feel so old in the fact I still refer to software applications on a PC as "programs".

You mean the good times there were data cartridges or a bit later luxury 5 1/4 " floppy disks were around and you could modify the hardware all by yourself ? Needed to read thick handbooks to write some code / a program before you could do anything ? - Yes, childhood was great in that perspective cause you learned how things work :D

Haha, I was only a kid then but I still have the 5 1/4 inch floppies I used on my old Leading Edge PC clone back in the mid-80s! I had that computer all through grade school and the better part of high school. I didn't get a new computer until much later. I think my next step was in 94 I picked up my first Pentium rig, and by then the 5 1/4 floppies were obsolete for several years.

Was as well a kid then but my dad was collecting different PCs for a long time and preferred to let me get into the matter very early cause otherwise I would have continued to take other devices apart. But like for many kids those days the Commodore PCs were the best for learning till the 90s or for some folks even till today . Helped a lot to understand electronic circuits and microcontrollers later. My first own PC I bought in 92 (with Intel 80486 SX CPU) since saved pocket money didn't allow more.
