@trimitek... no the last perpetual is for 3ds max 2020, if you stop the suscription before install and activate the 2021...
I Know because I stop my subscription for stay in 2020 perpetual....
of course today there are the Indie license for annual 3ds max 2021....
the perpetual license is no longer available..

A burning sinking ship for over 3 years, but in last months sinking very rapidly, I hope shutterstock didn't pay to much for it because whatever they paid, its a pure loss. If the ones still on it didn't see this coming...?

So, how will it affect the ones still on it?

My guess is worse and worse, probably expect a new out of this world contract you need to sign to sell out the last bits "still left” of your self-worth.

That's funny, so you can get that much money for a house on fire? Makes me wonder, how Ts was able to prove there still is some value there that would not evaporate soon? Remember a few months before the move to best price guarantee? Ts made aggressive move to try lock in artist (also tried with me but failed), promising them money a year or even two years ahead in return for signing a deal to let them have the content for that time, lots of folks probably believed they signed the deal of a lifetime but Ts probably already knew they where going to sell the house, they just grabbed everything they could to make it look good before the big sell. I always knew its some cooked up folks up there.

IMO 75M$ for ex-"largest" 3d-marketplace isn't a big money (for the stocks market) and it says only about how badly is "health" of TS this days.

I also use Affinity Photo for a long time - best $50 spent.
It gets some time to get used to it, but it works perfectly for my workflow. The only feature I had missed is the 'match color" one (I think that was the name in PS), but I rarely need it and you can get similar result with a bit more tinkering, so not a big deal.

I have Affinity Photo and it can save and open PSD without problems. I didn't encounter any limitations so far but I usually work with basic layers, masking blending, nothing fancy, so I can't guarantee it supports everything. For me it feels and has all the features I use in Photoshop. You can always try trial.

Thanks for the reply. I had a look at it's features but don't see any advantage to GIMP for me at the moment in order to learn new software ("it needs some time to get used to it" as Trimitek writes below). Have still to learn tons of stuff in "PD Howler" ( https://www.thebest3d.com/ ) cause love their brushes, filters, etc. as well. A good addition and investment are also the rulers of "Lazy Nezumi" which work with many programs (e.g. Photoshop, Affinity Photo, GIMP, Substance Painter, Zbrush) and many more listed in the FAQ on their website https://lazynezumi.com/faq

Maybe my opinion will not be popular but it would be only good thing - I mean the licence checking. Because if somebody use 3DMax or Maya software for selling 5$ models it is very suspicious how he is able to pay the commercial licence from it. And then the competition here would be more fair and maybe it would at least partly solve undercutting. :-)

Subscription costs me a fortune each month grrr. For anyone that's interested though, Substance Painter 2021 is on offer right now on Steam for £95. Cheaper than a sub, but still frighteningly high.

While we are on software, if you don't want to pay pricey Adobe sub you can buy cheap Affinity Photo (now 50% off) which is basically Photoshop clone with PSD export import.

@ IndieArt Wonder if that Affinity Photo can support all functionality of PSD - gonna have a look out of interest. I stick to the GIMP which can import/export them too except of some exceptions: https://wiki.gimp.org/wiki/PSD_support I very rarely open PSD anyway. More important it can open exr files (started experimenting with vector displacement maps) and can be used commercially for free. @SimonTGriffiths: Looks like there are some marketing - jokers at that big octopus. Last year they made big postings that last chance to get a perpetual license would be for Substance Painter 2020 on steam till end of october. See they offer 2021 for about 60€ at an discount of 53% now. It surprises me that there is such a big difference between continental Europe and the UK in price.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but Affinity Photo can only read from PSD and not save to it. I agree that it's really viable alternative to photoshop and i switched to it because like almost any sane person i hate software rental, but if price of both programs would be equal, i would never consider Affinity over photoshop.

Everyone is switching to Blender already, Autodesk would probably not take actions that could restrict access to content for its software users. Inevitably there is going to be way more blender content anyways (due to the frictionless accessibility to the software). Autodesk is already in a disadvantaged position so they would make that worse if they did.

I Use my Permanet license for 3ds max 2020... permanent license for vray next, Substance Painter and Marmoset, yes my 3d model is not cheap .... but I prefer work in that way...

Remember CGtrader was made possible due to bad royalty rate at Turbosquid, because of it CGtrader could make its main selling point “the better royalty website” and “the free open platform” (no exclusivity traps needed). If CGtrader would sell out to Adobe or whatever and royalty goo's bad for artists then opportunity for a new CGtrader alike comes along. Just never go exclusive anywhere and keep option to support a better platform if needed.

I have been loyal to Turbosquid since 2012. Hearing the news of the sale I have come here. That sale will go probably down hill. Cgtrader will most likely get an influx of artists like myself who will now switch. Most of the artists on Turbosquids forums are not looking forward to the sale at all.

@SimonTGriffiths, can you please share your experience with Sketchfab? I wanted to sell with them and when I signed up I realized I have to pay a fee to upload content. Is it worth it in your experience? Any other details would be appreciated thanks!

I was also considering it but, than i have found that there is a way to rip models from sketchfab, following that i have found tons and tons of stolen stuff from sketchfab on sale here on cgt, there isn't a category that is not ripped. I dont know if something have been done to prevent this by sketchfab, for me that was enough to avoid it. SimonTGriffiths will probably provide more useful info.

@PhantomDesign indeed you are correct about stolen sketchfab models. However usually they come with compressed lowres textures and I provide atleast 4k and working files. Im also moving more into the real-time space so Im mostly curious about the cost vs benefit as I mentioned in my post you have to pay a fee to upload to sketchfab.

I came across sketchfab ripped model that is on sale here, model uses 4k pbr tex, same tex set with the same resolution (4k) is offered here on cgt. I know the original author of the model so I can confirm this (he reported that to cgt support and they removed it). I don't know how they did it (thieves) for everything else regarding sketchfab I'm not competent to comment.

I don't know what mesh was here on cgt because there wasn't any wireframe renders, org model is in quads. I can tell you only what I gather trough my research on this because method used to rip models from sketchfab is also used to rip models from some other, lets call it platforms and things. Mesh is triangulated, model usually need some work depending on what it is, how is constructed, sometimes is "squashed/stretched" so proportions needs to be fixed. UVs are intact. I can't really talk details about this for obvious reasons.

I also considered sketchfab, but in addition to the security risk and payment fees already mentioned I also don't like the fact that you can not opt out of discounts and that they don't have any accounting (meaning payments are made directly from customer paypal to yours - which is frustrating for accounting and also rises some privacy issues/GDPR).

@3DCargo, where did you hear about a fee? I'm selling on sketchfab since the beginning and i can tell you - there are no fees to upload files to the store. There is however monthly limit how many non downloadable files you can upload (the ones that aren't in your store, or not available for free download), but that has nothing to do with marketplace. Their royalty rates are fair, but as trimitek said, you are forced into discounts, which are not as severe and frequent as in cgtrader, but the trend is worsening over time. Overall it's not bad marketplace, but it's either compelling for paying customers, or it's traditional models are not in demand over there - i'm struggling to get decent income from sketchfab, despite the fact that i'm selling there for 3 years now.

@LemonadeCG Maybe I misunderstood their policy, I hope so because I wanted to test that market place. When I was reading about their 'Free Basic Membership' it mentions uploads are limited to 50mb each, some of my real-time stuff is about 200-300mb each. the 'Pro' plan is 15 euros per month and limited to 200mb.

Been on Sketchfab for several years now. The thing I like the most about it is what you see is what you get. If someone buys your models there then they can't complain because they can really see everything about it. Also, you get paid instantly. I still get more sales on CGT, but Sketchfab is catching up. I tend to sell more higher-priced models on SF, and bread and butter here. The other cool thing about Sketchfab is once you've uploaded your model you can view it from any angle and with lots of other options. I use this for the screenshots that I upload here. P.S. Don't hold your breath for a sale until you have quite a lot of models on there. Frequent posting there appears to improve your chances of a sale as well.

SketchFab is useless. Just colorful wrap and "hipsterish" marketing. So at this moment only CGT offers more or less good conditions and chances for sales (at least for me and in my situation).

I don't know in which context is this question posted, from my perspective i think it's irrelevant, i never been seller on TS, actually i can't remember when was a last time I loaded that greedy website in my browser, so i don't understand why will TS ownership change affect me or some other artist who also never "been" there (maybe Im missing something). If question is posted by someone who works/sells on TS all I can say is that you should change your future in the past. As I already said on an older forum topic here: They will bury themselves, no matter who is the owner and i still stand by that.

Thieves are already huge competition here on cgt, i don't see any changes for me even if whole TS depart here on cgt and their thieves as well and as we know (maybe you dont know) most of thieves that sell here are also selling on ts and on renderhub etc etc. So the number of legit artist from TS is quite small in comparison of cgt current number of thieves.

Called it many years ago, when Matt Wisdom was trying to pass Turbosquid as an "eBay of 3D assets".
When the % royalty cuts start, we will see how much the top quality product creators can stomach and swallow, but I bet they are going to seriously think to jump off the ship before giving a 70% or 80% of their revenue to a PoS corporation like Shutterstock.

It will affect us that way that we can more concentrate on publishing 3D models here on CGT. :-)

Hm, but TS rate is 40-80% (depending on sales and exclusivity). Therefore, TS won't get much worse.

80% is a myth that practically never happens - they only use this as a marketing trick. ShutterStock implemented levels reset every year - imagine if you are in the guild and managed to get to diamond level and 60% royalty.... end of the year comes and suddenly you are back to 40% - nice eh?
