Received a message from an AI 2D Image to 3D model generation website.

Discussion started by ShaunMars101

I have just received a message from a website that is working on some sort of AI program capable of converting 2D images into 3D models. They're asking me to join their waiting list. I've spent years learning 3D modeling and have worked as both a freelancer and a full-time 3D artist. It's a bit worrisome for me to see how these companies are potentially complicating our line of work. I was also considering opening a store here on CGT. However, if websites like these can provide solutions so easily through subscriptions, it raises the question of why anyone would spend money on purchasing 3D models.

Models generated by AI it's like goods from AliExpress. Who are satisfied with such quality in any case wouldn't spend money on good quality models.

In the short term, only marketplace moderators will have problems, because they will face the question of how to sort and clean up the whole ocean of useless shit created by those lazy assholes who, thanks to such generators, will decide their finest hour has come.

That's quite relieving to hear, as I haven't seen any AI generated model

You don't have to worry too much about that, the topology is awful and the uv is cutting...oh jehh.

Yes, agree. The models produced by current AI tech are terrible, horrible, probably have no real appeal to regular consumers of 3D models. Most model-builders should familiarize themselves with these products and keep track of developments in this area. Just so that everyone knows. Actually, we have had "point cloud technology" for 3D model-building for four or five years now, and it has gained no traction in the marketplace. The current AI stuff us at about this level of development.

That being said, there are useful AI tools that can be a help to our trade. I am a serious (fanatical) devotee of Substance Designer, but there are textures I can build faster-better with a little help from some AI imaging tools. Thing like heavily grained old wood or logs that have lost half their bark. I still need Shader Magic and Substance Designer to complete these materials to a high standard, but the AI image generators give me a great start. I'm looking forward to advances in these kind of tools.

But, for model-building itself - nah. There is a reason that increasing efficiencies in polygonal and NURBS technology is a pre-occupation for the firms like Autodesk. There probably will be a market for people who play on their cell phones - that is, people who want to create and use a 3d model on their cell phone. That's OK. This isn't the marketplace most of us are dedicated to.
