model builders

Discussion started by tbad

Hi, I'm new to this forum and to the world of 3 D printing, I am only interested in printing for my self, I am a huge 1/350 scale model builder and my only interest is to collect stuff I can use for my model dioramas.

So far I must say I am very disappointed, I have downloaded a few building STL files and so far none have been error free making them all useless for 3D printing, and what makes this even more frustrating is I am a novice when it comes to programs like Meshmixer that supposedly can fix these errors but so far all it seems to do is make a deformed mess of the object. I am glad I didn't pay for any of these files that would really upset me.

Modeling for print requires very specific skills and knowledge, and getting a perfect file is not an easy task.
The truth is that there are lots of files that are not intended to be printed, someone putting an STL tag on them, it doesn't make them printable per se, it could be a simple stl export. of any model designed for anything else.
Few people must be building building models to print, it doesn't seem like a very productive field to me, but someone may be exporting models of another type under the stl tag.
I have personally seen some of my models advertised as printable somewhere, when in fact they are not.

I'm glad you did pay for any of those models with errors. A few things that might help is to find yourself a reputable model maker and stick to them. Also ask them for referrals. Usually, good model makers know other good model makers too. Always stick to the 3d printing category of this website only. Since you have no interest in gaming models or VFX, there's no sense in looking in the other categories. Also, on this website, the quality models are typically more expensive. You should be able to see a lot of preview renders, wireframes, and perhaps even printed photos of good 3d printable models before you purchase. I wouldn't trust any 3d model that does not provide a lot of information with the product, nor any product that only has one screenshot of the model in the software. There should be, at the very least, multiple views of the model from different angles, including wireframes to show you the shape. The description should include scale as well as provide more information about the quality and the uses of the model.

Good luck.
