general questions about selling models

Discussion started by m0ckingbird

Hi everyone,

So, I'm quite new here and new at 3D modelling too, i'm just an amateur but i'd like to upload a few models to sell in the future and i was wondering about the process. I'm very sorry if my questions have already been answered in previous posts or in the guidelines, i couldn't find the info

1- Is selling reserved to professionals or can anyone upload their work?

2- How do i know how much to sell my models for? Is there a rule or do i simply choose the price myself?

3- Am i allowed to download free models from other sites, modify them and then upload them as my own? If so, are there rules as far as crediting is concerned etc..?

Thanks a lot in advance!

1. Everyone can sell on here, it just depends if you are lucky enough that buyers find you and want to spend money on you.

2. You just price them on your own because as far as I know there is no perfect way to do it. A good idea though is to try to put a price in a mid range. Not too low and not too high to avoid either undercutting the market or scaring off the buyers.

3. It is a bad idea to use someone Else's models. Best if you make your own from scratch. Please try to make something unique and innovative because if you are a beginner and you are copying something like a car there will already be like 40 or more versions of the same car done better so no one will ever see it pop up in the search engines.

Great, thanks a lot for the info and quick response!
When i said "modifying other people's models" i was thinking about a lamp i designed, the lamp is mine but i used a lightbulb i downloaded ..but i guess you're right, best to do it all from scratch and keep it original

I think that no one is going to get angry for you using a light bulb but if you take someone's dragon let's say that they spent two weeks building and then just make a few mods and re sell it that will make you lots of enemies and your account may get shut down.

#3 you can't use other's models at all, even small bits, like lightbulbs. That would be illegal and you would be commiting a crime.

The only exception are models that are distrbuted under CC0 or public domain licences. You can do with such models whatever you want - use in your work, modify, sell, even sell without modifying. But models with such licence are very rare.

Anyway, it's always best to make sure that model is 100% made by you.

BTW, same goes for textures - you can't use them if licence doesn't permit that. But contrary to models if you modify texture enough, you are safe to use it on your models.

Regarding pricing. You cant just price them on your own with random number like marvimation sad. When you complete model, go to CG trader and type in search bar to see are there other models of type you created. If there are, look at the price, and look at quality of already published models. Compare the quality with your own model. Aim to achieve better quality then of existing models, and DO NOT place lower price if your model have quality. You are not the only artist in the world, and every action have long term consequences. When you offer high quality models for low price, you are undercutting other artists. U take away buyers from them on unfair way. Do you need to take care of others? No, you don't, you can be an a***ole. But being that creates enemies for you. More importantly by selling good quality models at lower price you are undermining yourself. You lower the value of entire industry. Clients go to this sites and look at prices. Then they go and post ridiculous job offers like: "create realistic rigged game ready character for 100$". Low prices are not good for any of us. Even on not so high quality models. We must be united on this.
