Fictitious or Based In Reality Models

Noob question: are there any guarantees when you purchase a "fictitious" cityscape or buildings that they are completely made up and not based on any real cities or buildings? Wondering about the legal ramifications if the buildings are considered at all recognizable. Thanks!
