Exporting models to different file formats

Discussion started by creative-crops

If you want to sell your 3d models in different file formats like max maya etc, is it necessary to buy all these programs just to export the file format or is there another (legal) way to get our models in the different formats? Is it allowed to e.g. get yourself a testversion of a 3d program to just import an obj, export the native format and upload in to cgtrader? Or is there any conversion software around?

There are student versions of Autodesk products, but you aren't allowed to use them commercially, so that wouldn't help. As for conversion softwares, i think there are few, but i highly doubt that they would be able to do decent job to convert from one proprietary format to another. I surely wouldn't want to offer formats which i can't test and can't give any support for, that would be open way for refunds and negative ratings. I'd rather stick with one native and few universal export formats.

Many modeling programs will save out in more than the native format. Usually obj and collada at least are supported. Simlab will import just about any file format and convert it to another format. It even packs all the geometry and textures in a zip file. Simlabs modeling tools are extremely limited though so you would need to create the model with something else. Rocket 3F is free on subscription and I believe that you can sell the models you make.

No way around the license issue I’m afraid.
However, Blender 3D could be option to provide file formats in, its free and wildly popular, it also has a large user base.

I mainly provide 3ds max content but are now lingering to also provide the content for Blender.
Already have the program installed on my PC and taken a look at it (its great) but not jet came to the point of actually importing my stuff and setting it up with those tools, unfortunately chances are I never will as I always have something ells to do :-p

Anyways if I ever get to the point of providing more formats then it will be in Blender format and C4D (Cinema 4D).

C4D prime is not to expensive (around 800 usd) and it also has a large user base.
I get lots of question from customers trying to get my stuff in C4D so for me it would make sense to provide that format.

Sorry for responding so late. Thanks for the answers. @kdjonesgb I've tested simlab but it doesn't seem possible to export e.g. a .max file that includes materials. It really seems like there is no way around this, although it would be cool.

No Simlab will not export max but it does pack obj, collada and fbx in a zip file with all the textures.

Analyze which is the program that suits you best, when exporting in a greater number of formats. My recommendation is 3ds Max or cinema 4D
