Copyright Violation

Discussion started by mindsetankit

I've been noticing that some 3D Models of copyrighted characters like Minions, are being sold on platforms like CGTrader. This got me thinking about the legal and ethical aspects of selling copyrighted content. What are your thoughts on this ?

Do you believe it's acceptable to sell 3D models of copyrighted characters without permission from the copyright holder? Have you encountered any instances of this in your own work or browsing?

Looking forward to hearing your perspectives@

Some ridiculous provocative questions. Do you believe it's acceptable to sell. If the copyright holder considers it unacceptable, they can easily submit a request and the model will be removed. Everyone decides for themselves whether to sell under an editorial, custom or royalty-free license, changing brand names, or something else.

Just like everyone else. Although such models are recommended to be sold under an editorial license.

Why only "recommended"? It should be strict rule that all branded models should be sold only under editorial licence. On the other marketplace the editorial licence is assigned automatically when anything branded (for example in product description) is detected and artist cannot it change. And it is problem of CGT there here is total anarchy in licencing and nobody is controlling it.

zabotlama, well https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/vehicle/train/caf-urbos-budapest I hope you have an agreement with CAF (https://www.caf.net)?

Oh my mistake I will of course change the license to editorial. But Ideal solution would be if CGT did it automatically. It is my older model when I was not so beware of these things now I strictly give editorial license to all branded models.

Copyright holder still has the right to make a claim against you (or anyone else who has similar models) even if you make the model free. Especially considering logos on the model. So, for example, by implementing forced transition to editorial licenses, everyone will be happy that now nothing is in danger but suddenly some solid car brand will appear with “Hi! What, are you having fun? Haha! Delete all immediately! ” And what's the point?

Apart from what @jaguarbeastproduction mentioned, as the customer purchasing content (which I assume you are since you don't have any models for sale - or anyone else for that matter), you must check each item for copyright infringements since sellers can just lie if they want to.

The only thing that is stopping them is community members and copyright owners who make it obvious. Some companies already have black and white legal terms on 3D content such as Ford and Lamborghini so those models usually get taken down rather fast.

This is completely illegal.

Then, I think CGTrader have to take action against it.
