Best laptops for Blender?

Discussion started by razor99

I am thinking about getting a laptop, mostly for Blender, and I was wondering what affordable laptops are the best for using this software? Currently I use a Mac, but I will not be able to use that pretty soon.

Below is link to an older cgt discussion about similar topic, although it isn't about laptops, any laptop with similar components/performance will do. My personal preference for 3d in general is custom made pc, I have very bad experience with laptops when it comes to 3d, mostly because of their cooling, sooner or later those will develop "bad solders" or "broken capacitators" or some others problems that are mostly expensive to fix or can't be fixed at all. My opinion is that laptops aren't long term solution for 3d work, but if laptop is a must because of transporation or something else check topic to get idea what to do, good luck.

I agree with @PhantomDesign in terms of similar components. Where we differ is that I have been using laptops exclusively for 3D for the last 4 years and have had a great experience so far.

Prior to that 4 years I also used many Custom PCs as well as workstation laptops and the technology is much different now, those older laptops did have many issues however now they are solid as a rock. For instance I render for up to 6hours a day on the minimum, sometimes 2 weeks straight on my current Gigabyte Aero laptop and never had an issue.

If you check gizmodosliptech on youtube, he has a great google spreadsheet where you can check the latest laptops this year and price/performance ratio. Each video he has in the description he links to his google spreadsheet where you can check for what you want based on your budget/performance requirements.

It would also be useful to know your budget, I can help you further with specific questions as I am also buying my new laptop this year and have done quite considerable research. I myself purchased the 2021 Asus Rog Strix Scar 17, 3080 RTX 16gb, 64gb dual channel ram, 2tb 980pro 7gb/sec, 165hz 100% P3 monitor and was the best I could find. The Lenovo 5/7 come in a close second place but for me were too heavy, short battery but has some things which is better than the asus but not my priority.

The other top options would be the new Gigabyte Aero, Razer Blade, HP Omen, and Asus Rog Zephyrus. (Not sure about your budget you would have to give us more inforamation about what you are willing to spend so we can help you pick from a good range of products). But without knowing your budget I still think if you are trying to cut costs and have a great machine the Zephyrus is absolutely amazing this year for its price but does have some caveats you should be aware of.

Thank you! I have seen the Gigabyte Aero and Razed Blade when I was doing some research earlier, I think I may get one of those or one similar. Thanks for responding!

You are welcome. The Razer Blade and Gigabyte Aero are really top of their class. Very portable well designed chassis & fast laptops. They are the thinnest ones out there so really suit the ultrabook style - you get a slight performance drop on the GPU compared to the thick and chunky laptops but really only a 10-20fps drop in games, when it comes to rendering and 3D you will be very pleased with the results.

One other thing to be aware of is that the Razer and Gigabyte (both being intel cpu) have very loud fans. Something you are probably not used to coming from a Macintosh - I mean really loud. Thats one reason Im going for the Asus this year - otherwise I would certainly go with the Gigabyte again.
