3D Models in Unreal Engine

Discussion started by damlak

Hello everybody,

I downloaded about a week ago unreal engine. As a team we would like to create a virtual museum for the university. For this I got the order to download the 3D models.
Now
I have the problem that I initially do not know which files I have to
download all, so that it is displayed correctly in the unreal engine or

How can I assemble the downloaded models in the unreal engine and then export?

I would be glad about an answer and help.

Thank you very much.

If the model is just a static.object then you can use .obj files otherwise use .fbx the default.import settings should be fine, if .obj you may want to check the "combine meshes" box

Materials you will always have to set up manually and im pretty sure .tiff files are.not supported

I agree with HUMMAROCKRECRODS that you need to import .obj or .fbx or you can also import the best file format (alembic). but you model needs to have two unwrapped non-overlapping UV's channels in order to work fine in Unreal engine, otherwise it will give u an error and also if you bake you lighting then you will have dark areas.

Hello everybody,

Thank you for your helpful answers.
I have downloaded the file as .fbx file. If I import it now in unreal engine, it does not look like the picture, because probably the texture was not taken over.
How can I proceed now with unreal engine so that the 3d model looks exactly as on the displayed picture. What settings do I have to make or do I need to import more things?

here is an example: https://www.cgtrader.com/free-3d-models/military/armor/medieval-wooden-shield

I would be very happy about your help. It would be best if you would perhaps explain it to me step by step, because I am unfortunately new in unreal engine.

Thank you very much.

Import the textures as you would the mesh and when you see them in your content browser i suggest you right click the diffuse texture which is the base color, and select in the drop down menu "create material" and if there are other textures, you can open up the material and plug the textures into thr corresponding nodes such as normal maps and specular, now do this for every main base color texture your model uses and apply them to mesh if they arent already applied from import

You can double click your mesh and on the right hand side will be the materials it is currently using you may click the drop down arrow and find your materials within this list

It looks to me that the product you linked has the textures in a seperate file that you must download

I will download the product and set it up for you and send you the project file and you can use it as a template for the rest of your models

No problem i am self taught and understand the confusion you are going through so i am happy to help! Sometime in the next hour or so when i get a moment i will upload a google drive link with the copy, once downloaded you can just double click the project icon to open it, if you have an existing project you can right click the content folder in the editor and select migrate, you then choose the content.directory of your current project and it will transfer the files into your project, otherwise you can just the project i send you as your base project

I have bought many asset from here some work some dont but unless it states the person selling the asset its for unreal and has that file for uasset the fbx or obj files will not work for some reason or another unreal will not take some file. I bought one or two 3d model maps that had fbx or obj file unreal will not convert those to a map to be used so please take this with a grain of salt if you need model from here make sure it states that it is a uasset file or you will have headache trying to make it work.

Apologies for replying to an old post, but i am curious how one makes a uasset file? As there is not many options with the uasset in cg trader that i like for furniture
