What are the pros and cons of 3D modelling vs making something in 2D?

Hi!
This may be an odd question, but I was wondering if there's any benefit to do something in 3D vs creating it in 2D (e.g. with Illustrator, not 2D objects created in 3D software).
For example, I could imagine that a definite plus for 3D would be that you can rotate an object in an animation (which would be a lot easier than doing it in 2D).
Obviously it all comes down to preference in the end, but from an objective point of view, what benefits do you see in 3D vs 2D?
