The gold funerary mask of Tutankhamun, an ancient Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty who reigned from 1334 to 1325 BC, is a remarkable artifact. It was discovered by Howard Carter in 1925, after being buried for more than 3,000 years in tomb KV62 in the Valley of the Kings. Currently, it is housed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. This death mask, standing at 54 centimeters (21.3 inches) tall and weighing over 10 kilograms (22 pounds) or 321.5 troy ounces, is adorned with semi-precious stones and bears a striking resemblance to Osiris, the Egyptian god of the afterlife. The mask's shoulders are inscribed with hieroglyphs from an ancient spell found in the Book of the Dead. In 2015, the mask underwent restoration when its plaited beard, weighing 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds), fell off and was hastily reattached by museum workers using glue. Renowned Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves describes this mask as not only the most iconic representation from Tutankhamun's tomb but also one of the most recognizable objects from ancient Egypt itself. Interestingly, some Egyptologists have proposed that the mask may have originally been intended for Queen Neferneferuaten since 2001.
