Tutankhamun's sarcophagus contained not just one, but three coffins to house the body of the king. The outer two coffins were skillfully crafted from wood and adorned with gold, as well as various semiprecious stones like lapis lazuli and turquoise. On the other hand, the innermost coffin was made entirely of solid gold. However, when Howard Carter initially discovered this coffin, it did not possess the gleaming golden appearance it currently showcases at the Egyptian Museum. According to Carter's excavation notes, the coffin was covered with a thick black pitch-like layer that extended from the hands down to the ankles. This layer was evidently an anointing liquid that had been poured over the coffin during the burial ceremony in significant quantities.
