Teleoperator Retrieval System

Teleoperator Retrieval System 3D model

Description

The Teleoperator Retrieval System (TRS) was a orbital tug proposed by NASA. Its primary mission was to perform a reboost of the Skylab space station, prior to refurbishment and reactivation by a series of Space Shuttle missions. For the Skylab Boost Mission, TRS would be carried to orbit by a Space Shuttle, and dock to Skylab's forward port under its own power (with the Shuttle crew remotely piloting the tug). It would then do a series of orbit raising burns, then separate and deorbit itself to leave the port open for Shuttle dockings.

Satellite servicing missions using TRS were also proposed, in which TRS would go to an orbit higher than the Shuttle could reach, dock to a satellite, return it to LEO for servicing or repair, then boost it back to its operating orbit afterwards. For these missions, with lower performance requirements, it might use only two of the four allowable propulsion modules (the radially-mounted tank and thruster kits)
