The program with the Space Shuttle orbiter lasted from the 1980s until the 2000s. It was a safe system with only two exceptions including the destruction of the vehicles and fatalities of the crews. The Space Shuttle program provided a reusable system for space flight that was historic in its implications, capabilities, and duration.
