Supergirl (also known as Kara Zor-El) is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by writer Otto Binder and designed by artist Al Plastino. Supergirl first appeared in a story published in Action Comics #252 (May 1959). With such a lengthy history, the character has undergone numerous costume changes across her extensive crime-fighting career, both in comics and on the big and small screen. This most iconic of Super-looks actually didn’t make it into continuity until 1988. The color scheme and design is extremely similar to that of Superman as well as taking cues from the last few iterations of the Supergirl costume, but in an elegant, simplified manner. The 1984 film version of Supergirl closely resembles some of the earliest looks, and is probably the vision that pops into most heads when imagining the character. Supergirl’s costume in the CW series largely imitates that one, with a few minor tweaks: darker shades, black tights, and higher boots. But the skirt remains. The 2016 costume from the Rebirth editorial relaunch follows this design very closely aswell.
This design does not intends to representate any incarnation in particular, its rather a representation of the general visual consensus of the character, sort of speak, informed by all previous popular interpretations of the character in several media. In this particular case an amalgation of the common elements that prevail throught several different outfits seen in the comic-books.
This design is intended to represent Supergirl´s most iconic design from the comic-books while at the same time its not an adaptation from any specific version, allthough I used the classic Jose Luis Garcia Lopez´s DC Sytyle Guide from 1982 as the primary source.
