651 Squadron Army Air Corps was initially equipped with Defender AL1s in 2003 to fulfill an urgent operational requirement (UOR) for deployment in Iraq. These aircraft were later upgraded to AL2 standard in 2008, and additional AL2 aircraft have been procured since then. The Defender, commercially referred to as the Britten Norman BN-2T-4S Defender 4000, is a twin-engine, fixed-wing turboprop aircraft renowned for its versatility and surveillance capabilities.
Among its sophisticated features, the Defender can accommodate various surveillance equipment, including low light level television (LLTV) or infrared cameras mounted in a turret beneath the aircraft's nose. Additionally, it can be equipped with door-mounted and floor-mounted cameras, while radars and cameras can be mounted on wing hardpoints for enhanced coverage and reconnaissance capabilities.
Moreover, the Defender has the capability to integrate COMINT (Communications Intelligence) gear, enabling the interception and analysis of radio signals for intelligence gathering purposes. In hostile environments, the aircraft can be outfitted with infrared jammers and other defensive systems housed in pods under the wings, providing protection against surface-to-air threats during missions over hostile territories. This combination of advanced surveillance and defensive capabilities makes the Defender a highly valuable asset for military operations requiring reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, and protection in challenging environments.
