We will be finding out how to sort different types of 3d models by their extension
A file extension is an ending in the name of the file. It helps you know what types of files you are working with. For example, a plain text document might look like this: "myTextFile.txt" the .txt at the end of the file shows you that the file is a text file. A PNG image, will have the file extension .png showing you it is a PNG image. What about 3d models? Well, I am going to show you some popular 3d file extensions you should know about.
A .OBJ file is a very flexible and compatible file type. If you see any file with the ending .obj, that means that the file is an obj file. You will most likely see this file extension on any 3d model you come across. The OBJ file is compatible with almost anything, so if you are not sure what kind of file you need to download, I recommend .obj files. OBJ files do not have the highest detail, but are usually low in file size and are efficient to use on a day to day
An FBX or .FBX file is a file created in Autodesk. Autodesk is an application for creating several things, but mainly 3d models. FBX or .FBX files are very compatible and it is hard to come across a service that does not allow FBX or .FBX files. FBX or .FBX files are usually high in detail, flexible, and have lower sized files. While they are meant for Autodesk, I assure you, they will work pretty much anywhere.
3DS files or .3DS files are also AUtodesk files. They are very similar to FBX files but are not nearly as compatible with most services. You can use a file converter if they are not compatible to convert them to pretty much any file extension. These files are for Autodesk 3ds Max strongly, and are not compatible or allowed with a lot of other services.
We have gone through the most common file extensions you might need to know about, so know you know for sure what to download. Thank you for reading this and I hope it helped! This should help you when it comes to downloading 3d models anywhere.
