Car Crash Tutorial | Maya

1

lets create a new scene. now create a plane , i want my car to collide with this plane and a concrete block.

Step 2

now i have downloaded a model online , modeling part is lengthy so i will skip modeling and import a model for now. lets import a car.select all the objects from outliner , you can get this outliner tab from windows >> outliner , select all the objects and group them together ctrl + G so it will be easier to scale and move the whole car.now lets a import a concrete block , i want my car to collide with this concrete block. you can find these geometries online if you dont want to model them and save your time in time consuming projects. lets scale down the block too. now there are many wany ways to animate and i like to animate my simple geometries by parenting the whole body with a skeleton. in case of car i am going to choose car chesis as the skeleton and left of the body as child. so when i move chasis only the whole car moves. select chasis and and car and go to animation tab then go to constrain and click on parent ,you can see if i move chasis whole car moves, now lets animate the car now .

Step 3

i wont be animating the wheels ,i want to keep this tutorial specifically for car colllision. go to frame 0 and press S. now go to frame say 25 and move the chasis just infront of concrete block and press S to key if.

Step 4

now if you play it you see your car animated. i will only collide this the bumper my computer cant hold the simulation for whole car. you can collide the chasis and bonet ,its your choice. slect the bumper, go to FX tab and then go to ncloth and then create ncloth. go to nucleous and also set gravity to and and use plane.

Step 5

also lets create the collider first , to set this block and plane for collision , go to ncloth and select create passive collider. now if you play the video you see the mesh going downwards, so annimate the cloth for precisely the frame before the car touches the block. now go to time attributes and then set start frame to 24 , play the video and you will se ncloth starting from 24th frmae. to move the bumper in any direction select the ncloth in outliner and go to firld/solvers and go to uniform , i will reset the setting for now.

Step 6

now set direction x =0 set direction y=0 and set direction z =-1 and magnitude to 50 play the animation, you see bumper moving forward lets animate the car little further so it will move with bumper. play the animation ,you see now the car is moving with bumper.

Step 7

lets change the properties of this ncloth so it will look like more like a metal , go to ncloth in outliner and go to attribute editor and then go to presets and select soft sheet metal, you can replace the ncloth properties to a softsheetmetal or blend to a certain percentage, i will blend to 35% because of my machine's limitations play the animation. bumper works fine for me but now you see car moving faster than bumper. so i am going to animate the car movement again . also if you want your ncloth movement faster go to uniform fiels in outliner and set magnnitude to a higher value this works fine for me. now i want the roof to collide with the plane when my car crashes after flying in the air . there are ways to animate this you can animate uniform fields and ncloths. i am going to duplicate the car and animate that for crash on the plane. set visiblity to null and keyframe it for the original imported car ,and at start set visiblity to yes and keyframe it. for duplicate set visiblity to null and keyframe it at start ,and just when you want your duplicate to show up set visiblity to yes and keyframe it. you will hae to setvisiblity on anf off for chasis and the group individually. after it is done.

Step 8

lets animate the duplicate after the original is hidden. yu see the dents are duplicated so in the final animaton everything will be seen. you can scatter the glass and lights you can crete debris and smoke , like i said i want to keep this short and specific. lets play the animation. you can set keyframe in uniformfield for magnitude and direction. i am working on a project and i have created a prototype for that. if i play the animation it will move slower for a machine like mine. if you have a high budget you have the luxury , but for now i have to create a playblast video to see how my animation looks. go to timeline and right click and select the o[tion for playblast . select format to avi quality to 100 .diplay size i want it as my render setting. save it to a desired location. lets save it bythe name accidentprototype and click playblast. and wait for the animation to finish in your timeline. its just a protptype , there will be debris smoke and texture and more ncloths colisions. the roof and bonet will be colliding with ground plane. you can animate the mmovement of your animation through the graph editior. go to windows >> animation editor >>> graph editior. you can chnge the movement in any direction accordingly. rotation also.
