The Beekman Tower, formerly known as the Panhellenic Tower, is a 288ft (88m) tall skyscraper in New York City. The building was designed by John Mead Howells in a style that combined art deco massing with gothic-inspired ornamentation. The building was completed in 1928, opening as Manhattan's only hotel owned and managed by women. Beekman Tower's design, like many other art deco towers, was based on Eliel Saarinen's 2nd-place-finishing plan submitted in a competition to design Chicago's Tribune Tower. For many years before the UN Headquarters was constructed nearby, the building stood prominently over Manhattan's far eastern side along the river.
