The building stands at 421m high making it the 8th tallest skyscraper in the world. Upon completion in 1998 the building was the second tallest structure in Shanghai after the Oriental Pearl Tower. The Building was deigned by Skidmore, Owings %26 Merrill who based the buildings proportions around the number 8. For example the building has 88 floors which are divided into 16 segments, each of which is 1/8th shorter than the 16-story base. The building also contains one of the world's largest atriums at a height of 115m.
