The Palacio de Congresos of Badajoz is opened in 2006 and built inside the bastion of San Roque, the seventeenth century building. The palace is the work of architects José Selgas and Lucía Cano Laso, and was built by the Junta de Extremadura. The building was selected for the exhibition On Site: New Architecture in Spain MOMA, along with other 52 buildings featuring the most representative of the new Spanish architecture of the last 30 years. Since its construction it has become a true symbol of the vanguard of Extremadura. The palace is erected on the site where the old bullring, known as the scene of one of the largest massacres occurred during the Spanish Civil War was located.
