Two years later, the need arose to build a cathedral. Campo de San Juan, an area located outside the citadel was chosen as the site. In 1276, the cathedral was consecrated and dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Nevertheless, the building work continued until the fifteenth century, not being completely finished until the eighteenth century. In this temple the betrothal the then Prince of Asturias and future King Ferdinand VI with the Portuguese Infanta Dona Barbara de Braganza in 1729, who was queen of Spain until the death of the first took place in 1758. Structure: Externally, given the nature border city, Badajoz Cathedral resembles a fortress: it has strong walls, battlements and a sober and powerful tower where the bell is. The tower is the most outstanding foreign element. It is 11 meters wide and 41 meters high, and is equipped with three bodies and bell. Although the present appearance offers a unique tower, there were plans to build two, one on each side of the main facade, but for various reasons and vicissitudes in the history of the city could only be lifted we can see today. La Puerta de San Juan. The Puerta del Cordero. La Puerta de San Blas.
