Dark retro Scifi Helmet

Discussion started by lucentforge

Just finished modeling and packaging my first 3D helmet.

I wanted to create a hellworn, retro-scifi helmet for use in character portraits and general artwork projects.

Hope you like it, cheers!

Thanks 8sianDude!

I have spent about 2 months working on the helmet and I'm happy with the result. The helmet comes with 21 UV-mapped and PBR textured surfaces (Color, Height, Metallic, Normal + Roughness) and a customizable internal lighting system. The FilterUnit with oxygen tubes is a separate object, but I also provide a merged version with everything joined. There are three quality versions of the Helmet + FilterUnit mesh: low quality, standard and high quality. I Zremeshed and projected the mesh in Zbrush to achieve evenly distributed quads and spent many weeks working in Substance Painter to come up with several color options. Now I'm game for my next project. :)

Harry09909, thanks!

There are many inspiring and well-designed helmets here on CGTrader. It is however a bit tricky to find sci-fi helmets that shows a character's face clearly for character portraits. I love the helmet design of Shane Stover who made the helmets for the Interstellar movie. I think he nailed a good balance between details that appear practical and overall design simplicity, while allowing for showing all the facial expressions in detail. I grew up seeing the 1980'ies science fiction retro-style on book covers and enjoy the atmosphere of rugged, beaten metal, aged leather and exposed wires. There is something fascinating about low-tech instrument panels, something you might be able to build in a garage. There's an inviting impression of ad-hoc tinkering possibilities in the low-tech style.
