Tomasz Rozkosz, the founder and leader of one
of the best known 3D design teams –
SQUIR, doesn’t attempt to sugar-coat the
career in 3D industry – it’s tough and competitive, and occasional cheating
clients can inject a lot of disappointment into your professional life… But he also agrees that the idea of
his work outliving him makes it all seem worthy the hard work.
Tomasz confessed he's so swamped with work he doesn't have time for Facebook, blogging or making tutorials.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and how
you got into the 3D industry?
My name is Tomasz Rozkosz and I'm the leader of
the SQUIR team. I've started playing with 3d graphics at the 3d studio Dos in
1995, just to have some break from drawing and painting I did in free time. In
2000, somebody found my artworks in an online gallery and asked me to make the
first model for custom order. He liked it, so asked me for another model and
then a few more. Soon after, a few other customers found my works in the online
gallery and started giving me more jobs than I was able to do myself, so I had
to ask a few friends to help me :)
So, I can say
it was just good luck that somebody decided to start paying me for my hobby :)

What kind of research process do you have?
As blueprints are usually not accurate and
don't even fit each other, I always suggest to start from a good camera photo fitment.
If you make the first lines to fit several camera angles, it will give you
better accuracy than any blueprints found on Google :). Later, with regards to
modelling, there's nothing unusual, no special tricks, nothing like finishing a
model in one day :). A good model of our quality level is 40-50 hours of work,
and this cannot be skipped.

How do you market your products? Can you share
some tips & tricks?
I don't see
myself as a seller, I'm just a simple modeller. So what could I know about the
market? Google knows more than I do! :)
What do you enjoy most about working in 3D
industry?
I like the
feeling that our models will be somewhere around, in usage, a long time after
we pass away :-). After all, what's left after us is the only thing that does
really matter.

What’s the hardest thing being a professional
3D designer?
Dealing
with cheaters, thieves, dishonest customers, who pay with stolen credit cards
and feel safe to trick you, because you cannot sue them in a foreign country.
What software do you use?
3dsmax +
photoshop is enough to do everything you can imagine.

What are you working on next?
We always
have about 20 models on the tasks list, and it's changing every day, so it's
not possible to tell what I'll be doing next :-)
Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk
Please finish the following sentences (being as
honest as you can.. :
)
My greatest inspiration is… watching Hollywood movies.
I abandon some of my works because… I
find out that my friend is working on the same model at the same time, so
making two similar models is pointless.
When I catch myself procrastinating, I…
'm probably on holidays, anyway :-).
I’m most productive when… my phone
is off . That's why it's usually off all the time...
I take a break from my work when… I
can play with real cars :-)
