Triceratops dinosaur description

This 65-million-year-old Triceratops has a large frill on the back of its skull, two large horns over its eyes, and a smaller horn on its nose. Triceratops was a rhinoceros-like dinosaur. It walked on four sturdy legs and had three horns on its face along with a large bony plate projecting from the back of its skull (a frill). One short horn above its parrot-like beak and two longer horns (over 3 feet or 1 m long) above its eyes probably provided protection from predators. The horns were possibly used in mating rivalry and rituals. It had a large skull, up to 10 feet (3 m) long, one of the largest skulls of any land animal ever discovered. Its head was nearly one-third as long as its body. Triceratops hatched from eggs.

Triceratops Fossils and Discoveries

Triceratops fossils are an incredible part of the natural world that paleontologists and other scientists have studied since they were first discovered. The first Triceratops fossil was discovered in the late 1800s. Since then, much research has gone into understanding how this dinosaur lived, died, and interacted with its environment. Triceratops’ bones are quite distinct from other dinosaurs due to their three horns and large frilled head crest, making them easily recognizable. The Triceratops horn was sheathed in an outer layer comparable to what is found on our fingernails. They were herbivores that lived in herds on the plains of North America during the Late Cretaceous Period.
