Butter mushroom (Latin Suillus) is a genus of tubular edible mushrooms of the Boletaceae family. It got its name from its oily, slippery cap. Characteristic features that distinguish most species of butter mushrooms from other Boletaceae are the sticky, mucous, easily removable skin of the cap and the ring remaining from the private veil.
Due to the peculiarities of morphology, some taxonomists classify the genus Suillus as a member of the Gomphidiaceae family, or even separate it into a separate family Suillaceae.
