The pink milk cap (Lactarius torminosus) is a lamellar cap mushroom of the genus Lactarius.
The cap (4–15 cm in diameter) is woolly-fibrous, flat, depressed in the center, with a strongly inwardly curled fluffy edge, pinkish-reddish, with red concentric zones. The plates are whitish or yellowish-pinkish, fused to the stem or descending along it. The stem (4–9 cm long) is whitish-pink, cylindrical, smooth, hollow. The flesh is whitish or creamy. The milky juice is white, bitter.
The pink milk cap is common in Eurasia and North America. In Russia, it grows in the European part, Western Siberia and the Far East. It forms mycorrhiza with birch. It grows in birch and mixed forests, usually in groups, in July–October.
The pink volnushka is edible after preliminary soaking and boiling. In some countries of Eastern and Central Europe it is considered poisonous.
