- Weight: 2.5-3.0kg
- Era: 15th-16th century
- Region: western europe
The bastard sword was a sword used by Swiss mercenaries in the 15th century. About a third of the blade is double-edged. The length of the handle is about a fist and a half longer than that of a conventional sword, and for this reason it is also called a hand and a half sword. The long handle allowed for a variety of applications, such as cutting with one hand and stabbing or lunging with both hands. The etymology of the bastard sword is not clear, but at the time, swords that were mainly used for cutting were classified as Germanic, and swords that were mainly used for stabbing were classified as Latin, and it is said that it was called a 'bastard' because it was capable of all attacks.
