The Uchigatana (打刀) is a weapon that became widespread after the Muromachi period. In modern Japan, the term Japanese sword refers to this uchigatana. As the nature of warfare shifted to infantry battles, the uchigatana, which was easier to handle than the larger and heavier tachi (18p), became more widely used.To enhance portability and allow for quick drawing, the blade was positioned facing upward, and the scabbard was tucked into the waistband. Since there was little structural difference between the uchigatana and the tachi blade, some tachi blades were shortened and modified into uchigatana. In the early stages, uchigatana blades were curved like the tachi, but as the era shifted to one emphasizing training with bamboo swords (shinai), straight blades became more preferred.
