The Atlanta class of light cruisers was built by the US Navy in WW2 and was used through the entirety of the war. They were designed as heavy AA escorts, with their main armament consisting out of dual purpose 5-inch batteries. That way they could effectively shield convoys or task forces from enemy air attacks, or enforce the air denial near carriers. Since they had little armour, they couldnt stand their ground in surface combat situations, having to rely on heavier units to shield them.
Overall 8 units were built, starting in 1940 with the last unit finishing completion in February of 1945. The lead ship of the class was the Atlanta, followed by Juneau, San Diego, San Juan, Oakland, Reno, Flint and Tucson. All units saw heavy combat within the Pacific, mainly the battle around Guadacanal. Atlanta and Juneau were sunk in said battle on the same day, being the only units lost of that class.
After the war all ships were decommissioned and were struck within the late 50s and early 60s, being scrapped not long after.
