The Scharnhorst- class of battleships/battlecruisers was contructed for the German Kriegsmarine in WW2. Two units were built, Gneisenau was the sistership. Both were laid down in 1935 and entered service just before the beginning of the war. They were the fastest, heaviest and most advanced ship built until then by Germany and used systems which were already proven in the Panzerschiffe.
When the war broke out, both ships saw service and commenced merchant raiding within Operation Berlin. After the infamous Operation Cerberus, Gneisenau never saw active engagements anymore due to heavy damage and Air Raids, she got dismantled in the last years of the war and scuttled in the port of Gdynia as a blockade only to be raised in 1951. Scharnhorst got sent out to commence further commerce raiding in 1943, yet got stopped by british ships, HMS Duke of York under them. She got sunk and took all but 36 from her 2000 men crew down with her.
