The Berlin-class is a class of fleet replenishment ships in service with the German Navy.
After the acquisition of the Rhön-class and the growing importance of resupply at sea with larger units and ammunitions, the German Navy chose to order three units of the newly designed Berlin-class. This class serves as a base for medical support as well as resupply of all kinds of materials. This included underway replenishment with the help of two seperate booms located amidships. The first unit was laid down and launched in 1999, entering service two years later. Initially only two units were built, being the Berlin and Frankfurt am Main. The third unit, Bonn, was ordered several years later and entered service in 2013. All units took part in several exercises and missions, but did not experience any major interactions so far. A large refit for the entire class is planned to take part in the coming years. As the Royal Canadian Navy has chosen to use the design for their new Protecteur-class of vessels, it is likely that the over 20-year old units will be brought up to specification with their newer counterparts.
This model includes a statsheet which displays some data of the ship as well as two renderings of the model. The full scale image is located in the zip-archive.
Note: This model is recommended to be used in the 1/2000 scale. The models itself isnt scaled, the scale table is down below.
1/4000: 4,33cm or 1.7in
1/3000: 5,76cm or 2.26in
1/2000: 8,65cm or 3.4in
1/1000: 17,3cm or 6.81in
For self calculation: The FGS Berlin is roughly 173m or 569ft 11in long.
The model is intended to be used with little supports as possible, yet some are recommended below the barrel of the cranes and decks. Be carefull when removing the support structures, as the resupply mast is quite fragile. I recommend using a resin printer for this. Up and Downsclaling might be possible, yet I dont know to what extend.
If you face issues with the model, have questions or want to propose some changes, please reach out to me, I am always happy to help. I am also open for suggetions for new ships which I havent done yet, as I am looking to expand my catalogue of ships.
